The Situation
The storm left more damage than it looked like
In late February 2025, a hailstorm swept through Bell County dropping stones between three-quarters and one inch in diameter across Copperas Cove. Mark had been through enough Texas weather to know that hail like that usually meant roof trouble, but the damage wasn't obvious from the ground. The shingles looked mostly intact. What he noticed was different: a slow drip in the corner of his attic about a week after the storm, and a line of granules that had washed into the gutters.
He called Red Roan for a free inspection. We were on site within two days. What looked minor from street level told a different story up on the roof. Across three slopes, we documented 47 impact points where hailstones had struck hard enough to fracture the shingle mat beneath the surface granules. That kind of damage doesn't show up as missing shingles or obvious holes — it shows up as water intrusion six months later, when the damaged spots finally let moisture through.
We photographed each impact point, measured the hail spatter pattern, and prepared a full inspection report for Mark's State Farm claim. At that point, we'd done our job whether he used us for the replacement or not. But the documentation we put together was what made the claim work.
Inspection: 47 impact points across 3 slopes
Full tear-off, day one — deck inspected before underlayment
Finished — GAF Timberline HDZ Charcoal, day two
What We Did
Full replacement, done in a day and a half
State Farm approved the claim for a full replacement within two weeks of our inspection report being submitted. Mark called us back to do the work. We scheduled him for a Monday start.
Day one: full tear-off. We stripped the entire 2,400 square feet down to the decking and walked every sheet of plywood before laying anything new. One 4x8 section near the valley on the north slope had started to soften from the attic moisture — we replaced it. Ice and water shield went across all eaves and valleys before synthetic underlayment covered the field. Everything was papered and ready before the crew left that afternoon.
Day two: shingles. We installed GAF Timberline HDZ in Charcoal using a 6-nail fastening pattern rather than the standard 4-nail — this matters in Central Texas, where straight-line wind events are common and a properly nailed roof holds up significantly better in high wind. All pipe boots, plumbing vents, and ridge cap were replaced with new material. Ridge vent was installed continuously along the peak to keep attic temps down in summer. Cleanup was done by mid-afternoon and we did a final magnetic sweep of the yard and driveway before leaving.
Mark walked the finished job with our crew lead before we packed out. His out-of-pocket cost after the approved claim was zero.
